Bark used in ground ovens gives a pleasant, smoky taste to large mammals and fish and is often superior to the European system of cooking.

Extensively used right throughout Australian coastal regions, particularly with inter-tribal gatherings.

Also used inland.

Related species are used for the same purpose. Carrying fire to new campsite for 6-8 hours (this practice was used by Aboriginal people and is unknown anywhere else in the world).

The fire carrier held great status in the tribe. Ignited Bloodwood was wrapped in a bandage of Paperbark and secured and carried with Lawyer vine.

Enormously important tree (many uses).
